In the past six months, there have been two significant reports outlining the damage that is being done to the worlds sensitive coral reef ecosystems.

The first report by an Italian University reported that 4000 to 6000 metric tons of chemical sunscreen ingredients are being deposited into the world oceans each year and certain chemical UV filters used in the most popular sunscreen are bleaching coral in as little at four days.

The second report by Reef Relief http://www.reefrelief.org, said half of coral reefs are in danger of becoming extinct. This information is alarming, to say the least. These ecosystems are home to some of the worlds most diverse wildlife.

What can you do about it? Be aware of how the products you use affect the environment around you. Some sunscreen chemicals (like oxybenzone), after being washed off in the sink or shower, have the ability to survive the sewage treatment process and harm rivers, lakes, oceans and wetlands.

When you go to swimming in the outdoors, wear a chemical free sunscreen with ingredients that are environmentally friendly. Be a conscious consumer, wear MelanSol everyday. Its biodegradable ingredients protect your and the world around you.

Michael J Russ
Puresunscreen.com

I saw an advertisement on TV by a major manufacturer who was promoting a lotion (with chemical ingredients) that also contained UV filters to protect your skin from casual UV exposure-I believe the SPF was equivalent to a 15. They said their "unique" combination would give the lotion the ability to moisturize your skin while providing protection from casual UV exposure as well. A great idea, however, they are on the right track, but with the wrong ingredients.

Examples of casual exposure to UV rays include walking from the house to the car, encountering UV rays through the window of your car, outside errands, shopping in an outdoor shopping mall. Generally its the time you spend doing anything other than purposely being in the sun, like taking a beach vacation, going to a ball game, or laying by the pool (and this is most of your lifetime). According to the FDA, 90 percent of all lifetime UV skin damage will happen as a result of casual UV exposure.

There are a lot of these SPF lotions on the market. Some of them are extremely expensive. If you buy this kind of lotion, the question I would ask is, "If the lotion also protects my skin from UV damage, how long will the protection last?" This is an important question because I know how chemical UV filters are designed to work. In simple terms, chemical UV filters use energy to absorb UV radiation and convert it into free radicals (rogue molecules).

Contrary to what you have been led to believe, UV filters (designed to absorb or reflecting UV rays) DO NOT PREVENT SKIN CANCER. Skin cancer is caused by free radicals (rogue molecules) that damage cells. According to a study by The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, free radicals (photoaging damage)can only be addressed with the use of strong topical antioxidants, combined with UV filters that don't add to the issue of free radical accumulation. MelanSol was created specifically to address radicals and the damage they cause.

Two conflicting issues come to mind when combining chemical UV filters with lotions. First, chemical UV filters can only maintain a level of energy required to perform their function for a short period of time--generally only up to two hours. This makes an SPF lotion inadequate at protecting you throughout a complete day of casual UV exposure. Second, chemical UV filters need up to 30 minutes to reach a state of energy where they can achieve full UV absorption, so you would need to apply them well before going outside if you want to be protected.

In order to successfully protect yourself from a days worth of casual exposure, you will need to apply physical (non-chemical or natural) UV filters , like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, that do not breakdown and decay. Instead of absorbing UV radiation with energy, they reflect UV radiation and do not require a chemical reaction to do their job, hence they will protect provide better protection for a days worth of casual UV exposure. In fact, zinc oxide has the broadest full spectrum UVA/UVB coverage.

MelanSol Dark Tanning Lotion was designed to be the perfect moisturizing lotion with UV protection and a natural tanning lotion for people who rarely burn and easily tan. Its super antioxidant protection protects your skin through the casual exposure you experience day in and day out. Its texture is silky smooth and the oil essences soak into your skin, providing the nourishment often missed by other lotions that depend upon chemical ingredients.

Contrary to what you have heard, UV radiation is not the worst thing that could ever happen to you. Several studies have shown that UV rays do have a positive effect on your mental and physical health. The problem is, as with everything, overdoing it can cause irreversible skin damage, caused by harmful free radicals.

The key to safe UV exposure is maintaining an oxidant (free radical)/antioxidant balance. Maintaining this oxidative balance is what MelanSol all natural antioxidant sunscreen is designed to do.

Michael J. Russ
PureSunscreen.com

I wanted to let you know that UV protection for Pregnant Mother's, people taking antibiotics and other assorted medications, and those undergoing chemotherapy is incredibly important. When you experience these circumstances, your skin becomes ultra sensitive to UV rays. Protecting your skin should be your top priority and MelanSol can help.

What is important is that you give serious thought to applying a UV protective sunscreen that doesn't contain chemical scents, preservatives, and active UV filters. Studies have shown that these chemicals can decay and enter your blood stream. One study showed that one of the most popular hormone active chemical UV filters, oxybenzone, has been shown to survive the sewage treatment process and impact the environment. Another study revealed that this same active chemical UV filter was present in 97% of people tested for it.

Obviously, I have a bias towards the natural side of things, however, ask yourself one question, "If a scientifically designed all natural sunscreen alternative were available, would you used it?"

Check out MelanSol and call me with any questions you have our product.

Dermatologists state that sunscreen should be used each and every day! This call should be taken seriously. We have a product that doesn't make you feel as if you want to wash it off the minute you put it on.
In the last 8 months I have come to understand that the battle to inform America about the importance of using a sunscreen that contains topical antioxidants is just beginning. Whenever I have an opportunity to get face-to-face with people, the number one question I get is, "What's the SPF?"

In the last 40 years, the sunscreen industry has done an excellent job of convincing people that a higher SPF equals significantly more skin protection. Actually, aside from the fact that SPF is only an indicatior of UVB protection, this is not the case. In fact, the difference between an SPF-20 and an SPF-30 is only 1.6%.

A report by The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology supports the MelanSol formulation. It concluded that traditional sunscreens are "inadequate" at protecting you from photoaging damage--free radical based UV skin damage that causes excess wrinkles, sagging skin, sun spots and skin cancer.

The report goes on to say that a new generation of sunscreen, containing topical antioxidants, is what is necessary in order to protect your skin from the type of photoaging skin I just mentioned.

This means that the majority of sunscreen lotions on the shelf don't protect the way you have been led to believe. You might not experience sunburn due to the absorbtion of UV rays by their chemical UV filters (active ingredients), however, the photoaging skin damage stills goes on.

All you need to know is that lifetime skin damage can only be prevented when you protect your skin from the free radical accumulation caused by UV rays. To do this, you have to apply strong topical antioxidants every time you expose your skin to UV rays. This is why dermatologists around the country tell you to use sunscreen everyday. The problem is that traditional sunscreens don't contain the antioxidants necessary to give you the protection you need prevent the damage they are refering to.

MelanSol was invented to approach skin protection from a new perspective--a 100 percent natural formula that combines super antioxidants with UV filters. Each MelanSol lotion has the exact same level of super antioxidants. What differs is the level of UV filtering. MelanSol lotions can filter anywhere from 50% to 95% of the UV rays you expose yourself to, providing you with levels of protection that meet your every need and circumstance.

Our goal at PureSunscreen.com is to educate and inform. Only then can you choose the best protection for your skin and that of your family.

Michael J Russ
PureSunscreen.com

You've no doubt heard the word anti-oxidant bantered about in the marketing slogans of the most highly advertised lotions and creams. Do you know what they are and the vital role they play in protecting your skin? Let me give you a quick primer. It may be slightly techincal, however, knowledge is the key to making sound choices.

When you expose yourself to the sun, UV rays cause free radicals (rogue molecules also referred to as oxidants) to form on your skin. These free radicals slowly cause your skin to oxidize the way a freshly cut apple oxidizes after it is exposed to air. The damage caused by this oxidation is irreversible and cummulative over your lifetime and reveals itself later in life as leathery skin, wrinkles, sun spots and possibly even skin cancer.

Anti-oxidants are important because they can prevent free radicals from damaging your skin. Your body has vitamin E and melanin to naturally defend itself against free radicals up to a certain point. When you spend a long time in the sun, these defenses can become overwhelmed (oxidative stress). Bio-Melanin is extracted from the fruit of the date palm- a fruit uses its Bio-Melanin to protect itself from extreme levels of solar radiation.

Up to now, the anti-oxidants of choice in sunscreen have included green tea and vitamin E. The problem is these two anti-oxidants are spent after capturing 2 to 10 free radicals per molecule-with no ability to actually terminate them. Bio-Melanin is a super anti-oxidant with the ability to capture and terminate over 1000 free radicals per molecule. Bio-Melanin also has the ability to regenerate green tea and vitamin E molecules so they can find even more free radicals. We include green tea and vitamin E in our formula because of this synergistic effect.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to what really protects your skin the best.
Do you make a conscious effort to positively impact the planet? If so, the next time you get ready to apply sunscreen, take a moment to look at its list of ingredients. If the list is a who's who of unidentifiable chemical active ingredients (like Oxybenzone), preservatives and scents, think about the impact they will have on the environments you visit-an ocean, lake or stream.

Researchers estimate that between 4000 and 6000 metric tons of sunscreen chemicals are dumped into the worlds oceans annually. They have also discovered that these chemicals are having a negative effect on the plants and animals they come in contact with.

What you might not be aware of is that when you wash off the chemicals in make-up, lotions, bug sprays and sunscreens, they don't just vanish into thin air. At least one of the most popular hormone active chemical UV filters used in sunscreen survived the water treatment plant and has been found in the tissue of bottom feeding fish. A recent study revealed that sunscreen chemicals have been bleaching coral in our most sensitive eco-systems.

In this day and age, it's high time we considered the environmental cause and effect of the products we use-sunscreen is no exception. We have the knowledge and resources to develop products that are in complete harmony with both our bodies and our environment.

At PureSunscreen.com, we are committed to providing the most natural and environmentally friendly sunscreen on the planet-MelanSol®.
